The exercise stress test, or ergometry, is performed by having the patient walk or run on a treadmill while monitoring heart activity and blood pressure. It is useful for simulating real-life physical exertion.
This test evaluates the heart’s exercise capacity, the behavior of the coronary arteries during activity, and the so-called chronotropic reserve, that is, how the heart rate adapts to increased demand.
Additionally, the test can reveal arrhythmias that only appear during exercise. It is especially recommended for both young individuals engaged in intense sports and older adults who exercise regularly.
